How to Dress for a Garden Party, Men's and Women's Guide

What to wear at a garden party?

As the weather is getting warmer, everyone wants to be spending more and more time outdoors. Especially here in the UK, the longer days and first signs of sun act as everyone’s signal to open up their gardens and patios. From weddings, anniversary dinners and birthdays hosted outdoors, to casual Sunday BBQs, the garden party is a staple event for the spring/summer season.

Smart Look

Weddings and other formal occasions are embracing the idea of a garden party into part of the celebrations, and just because an event is hosted outside doesn’t guarantee it’s less formal, so it’s always important to check dress codes.  Cocktail or formal wear are commonplace at outdoor weddings, however, an outdoors venue brings a great opportunity to bring some more life into those classic styles. Adding in a splash of spring colours or some florals will help complement the natural surroundings of the garden party, For women, a long floral gown is always an iconic and classy option here.

Whimsical look

A classic theme for a spring or summer outdoor gathering is a tea party. As soon as the weather gets above freezing, British people star scrambling to do everything and anything outdoors. One of these things being tea, sandwiches and cakes. A tea part in the sun an occasion that calls for a whimsical outfit. Pastel colours and floral patterns are not only springtime classics, but also lend themselves perfectly to a romantic and playful tea party. Light blues and pinks paired with light neutral tones work perfectly for this look. Chinos or shots (weather depending) keep the look casual, and a buttoned shirt adds some sophistication. Spring is a transitional season with changeable weather, so keep this look versatile with a jumper or cardigan that can be warn or removed as necessary.

For women, a casual sporty dress with trainers or tennis shoes. Women’s sports socks can elevate a casual but stylish outfit.

Accessories

No matter the style or theming of the gathering, if you are going to spend a significant amount of time outdoors, there are a few things to remember. Sun hats and sunglasses are very important to protect yourself from the sun. However, just slapping on any old had and glasses can ruin an otherwise perfectly curated outfit. We suggest buying one or two of each in a neutral and versatile colour and style. Invest in high quality accessories with a luxury feel, to make sure they always elevate your outfit instead of bringing it down.

Footwear

When possible, find out what kind of terrain you may be required to walk on, so that you can make sure you have appropriate footwear, you do not want to be wearing a light colour shoe if there is a high risk of mud. This especially important for women, as walking on heels over a lawn can be problematic, so if you are unsure then a secure wedge heel or flats are always a safe option.
