What Is National Retro Day?

Did you know that the 27th of February is National Retro Day? The annual holiday dedicated to nostalgia, taking things back to basics by ignoring the distractions of modern-day life and embracing simpler times.

Established in 2018 by Hermelinda A. Aguilar and her son and daughter-in-law Robert and Tina Duran, this day has been growing in popularity every year since. People gather to celebrate nostalgia for the “Good old times”. Although there is some debate about what decades count as “Retro”, there is no solid answer, and national retro day is meant as a celebration of childhood and adolescence, meaning that retro could mean anything from the 1950’s to the 2000’s depending on who you are celebrating with.

How to Celebrate

If you are interested in honouring this unusual holiday, then here are some ideas on how you could get involved:

Go back to old tech

Try to discard your mobile phone, computer and smart TV for the day. Dig out your records, cassette tapes, DVD’s or even that old iPod shuffle you have in the bottom of a draw somewhere, and experience entertainment the old-fashioned way.

Go back to analogue

Depending on what decades you feel most nostalgic for, you might want to discard technology all together and go totally analogue for a day, read some old novels or comic books that remind you of your childhood, or get together with some friends to play a sport or a nostalgic board game. You might be surprised at how much fun you can have in 24 hours of not looking at a screen.

Communicate the old-fashioned way

If you want to spread the word about national retro day, then don’t do it over text, as that isn’t in the spirit of things! Make a phone call on a landline, or write a handwritten latter to a friend, sharing the joys of taking things back to basics for a day!

Dress retro

Fashion is one of the most interesting and exciting things about decades gone by, so National Retro day is the perfect opportunity to dig into the back of your wardrobe and pull out some old favourites. Many fashions from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and even 2000’s are coming back strong in 2026 also, so now is the perfect time to experiment with bringing back the bold colours of the 1980’s or the boxy silhouettes of the 1990’s!
